My first time I had a chance to go to Ottawa, I was with my best friend at the time, and we were going for a day trip since we originally were staying in Montreal. The trip was short — we checked out the Parliament, saw the mall, and walked around. Pretty basic (and boring) I had to say.
Known for being the nation’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada isn’t what most people would think is a city to go shopping; but it was my second trip to Ottawa that made me really see what Ottawa was all about. Technically my first trip by myself in a city I had no clue about, the trip was free courtesy of a conference I was attending. Luckily for me, I had a chance to stay right in the middle of downtown Ottawa, close enough to the Parliament and, at the time, a block away from any shopping.
Being into the streetwear culture and having a love of boutiques, I knew that I wanted to find something different and urban — and being from Winnipeg, with only The Urban Bakery and TUB, I really needed to see something different. So, luckily for me, one of my good friends helped me find the location, and before I knew it, I was shopping to my heart’s delight to labels like Married To The Mob NYC (which I ended up picking up) Stussy, Hellz Bellz, The Hundreds, NIKE, 10 Deep and… well, you get my picture.
I have to say though — on the very first instance that I walked into the store, I didn’t feel intimiated or pressured or ignored unlike some boutiques that I’ve walked into before. The difference between NORML Clothing and a lot of other boutiques that I noticed was that they were (1) super friendly (2) everything was easy to find (3) they had an awesome selection + line of clothing and (4) I didn’t feel pressured, and could take my time — and isn’t that essentially what everybody wants from a boutique?

Another difference that NORML has over other Canadian urban boutiques, is their collaboration with UPPER PLAYGROUND. Collarborations are far and few to come by, but when you see a boutique like NORML doing something great like this, you should know that they’re one great store.
I’m definitely looking forward to checking their store out again if & when I make my way back to the east coast. If you have a chance to stop by Ottawa, this is definitely a place that is worth checking out. RIght now as well, if you live in the Ottawa area, this Wednesday, November 26th, they’ll be having a Friends & Family night with 20-50% on everything from clothes, shoes & bags. The sale will be running from 6:00PM - 9:00PM. Check out their Facebook event HERE. As well, they’ll be having their annual Christmas Party & coat drive on Saturday, December 13th. In exchange of a new or used coat, they’ll be giving ADVANCED tickets away for FREE! They’re available now… and I suggest you get them AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Who’s performing? Oh, well, you know – J-ROCC from Stone’s Throw Records (California), THE RUB from Ayres & Eleven (NYC) and SO MUCH MORE. Don’t have a jacket? That’s okay — $10 bucks gets you in. Read more about that awesome event HERE.
Kudos to the staff at NORML Clothing — I’m definitely going to have to make sure to have an interview with the owner & manager & staff next time I come in…. as well as shop my heart out. Again.
